How do I get started on social media?

How do I get started on social media as a healthcare professional?

Before creating a social media profile, decide what it is that you are aiming for. Different networks help achieve different objectives and many people have several accounts.

Creating an account for a public social media profile is easier than you think and remember that you can always go back and change it when you want. Look up some people you are interested in following in and let their profiles guide you. If you specifically choose to name your place of work, it is good practice to add a phrase that states that your tweets constitute your own opinion, not that of your employer.

10 easy steps to help you create a social media account

  1. Decide on your objective (see our guide below) - this will help you choose your platform
  2. Choose a username or handle that will allow people to identify you should you wish to use it for professional purposes
  3. Choose a password that is secure
  4. Upload your photo (professional if you are using it for professional purposes) or select an avatar if you're not comfortable in the beginning with a photo
  5. Write a short description about yourself - if you're on a public profile, consider including keywords (like "interventional cardiology" or "cardiologist" or "nurse")
  6. Select keywords/hashtags you’re interested in, this will help you curate information
  7. Follow key opinion leaders or societies (tip: to find someone's Twitter profile, type in their name with the word Twitter next to it, or LinkedIn)
  8. If you’re confident, start sharing your own opinions
  9. If you’re not, it’s ok to only listen
  10. Enjoy!

Tips for successful social media engagement

There are several things you can do to help increase engagement with your followers or audience. It is important to post at least 3-5 times a week, and don't forget weekends, as there is often more activity over weekends. If someone writes to you, take the time to respond. Use #hashtags to make it easier for people you don't know to find your post (public profiles) and links when appropriate. Images are great for increasing engagement!
