EuroPCR 2022 – Together again!
The clinical foundations for interventional cardiology practice: today and for the future
Paris, May 2022: A festive EuroPCR 2022 – the World Leading Course in interventional cardiovascular medicine – took place again in person, after a hiatus of 2 years caused by the COVID19 pandemic. The new blended EuroPCR format attracted 11,000 participants in person and online with hundreds of hours of Course selections, discussions and extensive programmes of clinical education that will have an impact on interventional cardiology practice in the weeks, months and years to come.
Throughout 4 days, Paris was the centre of the interventional cardiology universe with 11,000 attendees participating in EuroPCR 2022 from around the world. Building on the lessons learned about online delivery during the COVID pandemic, EuroPCR was redesigned with a unique blended approach offering a seamless educational experience. This could be seen in the fluidity of the contact between speakers, audience and content, and which sets the future standard for continuing medical education.
Created by and for its participants, innovation, research and sharing knowledge remain the driving force that animates EuroPCR and forms the basis of the ongoing commitment to bring together a community of specialists dedicated to advancing cardiovascular medicine and ensuring the highest level of patient-centred healthcare.
With its intensively developed and attractive content, accented by the creative organisation of the virtual and physical meeting space that encouraged interaction and learning, EuroPCR 2022 offered the 11,000 participants – whether in person or online – a wide gamut of activities covering all fields of interest.
Key topics included:
- World Hypertension Day, and hotlines presenting the latest data concerning the increasingly effective implementation of renal denervation.
- We CARE, a joint initiative of PCR and Stent – Save a Life!, who presented their first published analysis from the UK “Individual cardiovascular health and the economic costs of a pandemic”. Spanish, American and Italian papers will follow, with a French study now underway.
- Women as One, an organisation founded by interventional cardiologists Roxana Mehran and Marie-Claude Morice to promote talented women in medicine, “providing women physicians with unique professional opportunities” and building “a more inclusive, diverse and just workforce in medicine.”
- The European Bifurcation Club sessions with far-ranging discussions on state-of-the-art treatment of coronary artery disease and chronic total occlusions, among others.
- Treating structural heart disease today, the evolution and continued importance of the Heart Team; with sessions on the present and future of TAVI, valve durability, tricuspid and mitral interventions, risk stratification.
- Intracoronary physiology, the latest in imaging, artificial intelligence and robotics, treating MINOCA and more.
Celebrations:
- The 20-year anniversary of the first transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) in man performed by Prof. Alain Cribier
- 30 years of the radial approach, pioneered by Ferdinand Kiemeneij
- 10 years of the PCR-EAPCI Textbook
- 200 issues of EuroIntervention
Innovation: the centre of interventional cardiology
For the first time, at EuroPCR 2022, “Innovators Day” was not a separate day, but integrated into the scientific programme itself. The goal, to facilitate finding answers to unmet clinical needs, created a dynamic process that brought together inventors, investors, innovators and clinicians.
The Jon DeHaan Foundation Award ($200,000) for ground-breaking contributions to cardiovascular research and medical innovation was given to Jiayue Huang on behalf of Shengxian Tu (School of biomedical engineering, Shanghai Jiaotong University and Pulse Medical, China) for work on the “Real-time comprehensive assessment of coronary physiology and biomechanics from a single angiographic projection”.
The Abbott Award for best personalised care project went to Domenico D'Amari, Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli, Rome, Italy for “Myocardial bridge evaluation towards personalised medicine: The RIALTO registry”
The Andreas Grüntzig Ethica Award paid tribute to the essential role played in the interventional cardiovascular community by Nurses and Allied Professionals.
EuroPCR 2022 Awards for:
- Best clinical case - Fadi Sawaya, Beirut, Lebanon for “Early transcatheter aortic valve failure in a young inoperable patient”
- PCR’s Got Talent - Arif Khokhar, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, United Kingdom for “Coronary access after valve-in-valve TAVI with ACURATE neo: ex vivo analysis”
The EAPCI-PCR Fellows Course, traditionally held the day before EuroPCR, was spread out across the 4 days, allowing participants to benefit from total immersion and creating valuable networking opportunities.
The European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI) 2021 Grant programme, presented by EAPCI President, Emanuele Barbato:
- Kamil Bujak from Poland to work at the Hospital Clinic, Barcelona, Spain (Sponsor: Boston Scientific)
- Francesco Fracassi from Italy to work at Barts Heart Centre, St. Bartolomew Hospital, London, UK sponsored by (Boston Scientific)
- Marcos Manuel Garcia Guimaraesfrom Spain to work at St. Antonius Hospital, Nieuwegein, The Netherlands (Medtronic)
- Domagoj Markovic from Croatia to work at the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland (Terumo)
- Anastasios Alexandros Siskosfrom Greece to work at the Thoraxcenter, Erasmus University Medical Centre, Rotterdam, The Netherlands (Sponsor: Abiomed)
- Tatyana Storozhenko from the Ukraine to work at the Cardiovascular Center OLV, Aalst, Belgium (Cardinal Health)
- Maarten Vanhaverbeke from Croatia to work at the University Hospital of Zurich, Switzerland (Medtronic)
- Mariana Goncalves from Portugal to work at the Clinique Pasteur, Toulouse, France (Edwards Lifesciences)
- Blanca Trejo Velasco from Spain to work at the Heart Centre Leipzig, Germany (Edwards Lifesciences)
Building the future through continuity: PCR and EuroPCR don’t end with the closing of the annual Course!
How do you create the balance between research and practice?
How do you translate clinical data into clinical applications?
One answer is the dialogue that takes place at EuroPCR and continues well after the annual meeting ends, online at PCRonline, in the pages of EuroIntervention and in the many other Courses and opportunities that define the PCR family, from the PCR seminars to the seminal PCR Companions programme.
Upcoming PCR meetings include:
- AICT-AsiaPCR 6-8 October 2022
- PCR London Valves 27-29 November 2022
- PCR-CIT China Chengdu Valves 4-6 November 2022
- GulfPCR-GIM 14-15 December 2022
- PCR Tokyo Valves 17-19 February 2023
- AfricaPCR
And EuroPCR 2022 is still available on demand for 3 months following the Course.
Next year, EuroPCR 2023 will take place on 16 – 19 May
