Summary

From vascular access to reperfusion strategy, managing acute pulmonary embolism requires rapid decision-making, careful patient selection and increasingly sophisticated interventional techniques.

This EuroPCR 2026 session takes a procedural deep dive into contemporary pulmonary embolism management, focusing on thrombus aspiration techniques and the evolving role of computer-assisted vacuum thrombectomy.

Clinical evidence is reviewed through the STORM-PE trial, the first randomised controlled study comparing aspiration thrombectomy with standard care, while practical discussions address procedural workflow, technical pitfalls and management of high-risk and intermediate high-risk pulmonary embolism cases.

The session also explores how technological innovation may help optimise procedural efficiency, thrombus removal and overall patient management in acute PE intervention.

Learning Objectives

  • To understand indication, techniques and pitfalls of thrombus aspiration in acute pulmonary embolism
  • To learn latest clinical evidence on computer-assisted vacuum thrombectomy
  • To discuss how technological innovation can improve the procedure
