Women in Interventional Cardiology - Editorial
Dear PCR Companions,
At PCRonline, we think it is important to recognize women’s role in our profession as interventional cardiologists.
This is the reason why we want to dedicate a special page to them on the occasion of International Women’s Day, recognizing the significant contributions our WIC bring to our specialty.
It is indeed sad and of concern that, in 2021, we still see disparities and discriminations relating to sex, ethnicity and nationality in daily life or in our profession. Women and men are two sides of the same human being and we complement each other, as everyone is able to see a different aspect of a patient’s problem, something that is always enriching our interventional cardiology practice.
It is a pity to see that despite many efforts made, there are still some boundaries between women and men in our profession, not only in terms of the opportunities given but also in terms of salary. Women are significantly underrepresented in interventional cardiology (5% in the UK - 25% in Italy).

For all these reasons, we took the opportunity to ask some of our women leaders in interventional cardiology from different countries about their personal experience, their journey and their contributions not only to our profession but also to patients, organizations, and the society as a whole. We thought their stories might inspire young women who are wanting to become interventional cardiologists.
Our desire is to be welcoming and supportive of anyone who wants to pursue a career in our amazing specialty regardless of their sex, ethnicity and nationality. To this end, on the occasion of International Women’s Day, we ask that you join us in celebrating every woman in interventional cardiology!
Thank you very much.
