Summary

This EuroPCR 2026 session presents landmark randomised controlled trial data shaping interventional treatment of pulmonary embolism, with a focus on translating evidence into clinical practice.

It reviews the HI-PEITHO trial and its implications in intermediate-risk acute PE, where ultrasound-assisted catheter-directed thrombolysis (USCDT) reduced the composite endpoint of PE-related mortality, decompensation and early recurrence compared with anticoagulation, without increasing major bleeding or intracranial haemorrhage.

The session also clarifies criteria for selecting patients suitable for interventional treatment and provides practical, reproducible case examples to support implementation in routine care.

Learning Objectives

  • To learn landmark randomised controlled trial data to transform interventional pulmonary embolism care
  • To understand the criteria of severe pulmonary embolism for interventional treatment
  • To see cases you can replicate yourself tomorrow in your own institution
