John Webb
Dr. John Webb has been an early pioneer in a host of many different interventional cardiology procedures. He was fascinated by the heart as it was a ‘moveable part which could be held in the hand and fixed.’
His contributions to the development and advancement of TAVI and the management of other structural and valvular diseases have been enormous, helping render the TAVI procedure, initially requiring an antegrade, transseptal approach, a much easier procedure for others to adopt. John first collaborated with Edwards in their Pre-PVT acquisition Patriot System project—which was a self-expanding nitinol transfemoral TAVI system. He then continued to work very closely with Edwards Lifesciences developing and improving several retrograde approach delivery systems and iterations for their balloon-expandable valve. His center was the first to do a retrograde approach TAVI with the Cribier-Edwards valve, as well as the first transapical TAVI procedure. He also did the first balloon-expandable valve-in-valve procedures for aortic, mitral, tricuspid and pulmonary valve procedures.
Dr. Webb grew up in Vancouver and received his medical degree from the University of British Columbia. He lived in Europe for three years, trained in Toronto for three years and spent two years as a Canadian Heart Foundation fellow at UCSF in California. John returned to St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver in 2000. John is constantly traveling around the globe, sharing learnings and proctoring physicians on TAVI and other procedures. He has now installed a new Virtual Teaching Laboratory, which allows him to also share his experience and help teach people while staying closer to home.
