PCR Planet: interventional cardiology in the context of COVID-19 in Germany and Serbia
Interventional Cardiologists Julinda Mehilli, Munich, Germany, and Goran Stankovic, Belgrade, Serbia discuss the challenges of practicing cardiology in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic with William Wijns.
Despite the high number of cases in Bavaria, Julinda Mehili explains that in Munich the situation is under control and that they had time to prepare their structures following the experience of other countries. For example, they implemented special features focusing on the psychological well being of their patients.
In Belgrade, Goran Stankovic tells us the first decision they had was to select one hospital for Acute Coronary Syndromes, especially STEMI. They also reorganized their clinics so they have one for COVID-19 patients and another one for all other emergencies. Nonetheless, they are able to treat almost all patients, COVID-19 positive or not, with primary PCI.
According to them the positive outcome will be the broader use of telemedecine, for medical and educational purposes. Indeed during this crisis many physicians worlwide are connecting and sharing their experience through digital communication!

Dear Drs. William Wijn, Julinda Mehilli, and Goran Stankovic! All comments were excellent! I am impressed, among all the actions described, about the psychological support given by Dr. Julinda´s hospital. Patients are experiencing the “dark night of the soul” in terms of familiar isolation, loneliness, and, in some places, lack of information. Psychological attention to patients is a subject we should all think about in these conturbed days.
