COVID-19 vaccines: taking a closer look

As healthcare systems across the world struggle to meet the increasing demands of caring for a large number of patients affected by COVID-19, many cardiology services are faced with repurposing and the attention of our community is directed towards a possible solution to this health crisis. By the principle of prevention, vaccines are the hoped-for solution to this overwhelming health problem.

Objectives of this educational series on the analysis of Phase 3 clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccines:

  • to provide readers with the essentials needed to understand and take ownership of the key data related to the emerging COVID-19 vaccines, which can change the evolution of the pandemic, in order to ultimately help them to deliver advices to their patients, and
  • to encourage readers to apply the proposed method of analysis for developing their self-critical reflection on the published studies.

The content is analysed in the following way:

  1. Examination of the study methodology and results (according to the PICOT principle)
  2. Assessment of strengths and weaknesses (SWOT analysis)
  3. Burning questions and real-world applicability
  4. Critical reflection on effective life-long learning – interventional cardiologists in pandemic times

Reflection on effective life-long learning

In the current COVID-19 environment with an exponential development of ‘digital learning events’, it is essential to remember the foundation of effective post graduate learning in the field of medicine.
