PCR Planet: interventional cardiology in the context of COVID-19 in South Africa and Egypt

Interventional Cardiologists Hazem Khamis, Cairo, Egypt, and Mpiko Ntsekhe, Cape Town, South Africa, discuss the challenges of practicing cardiology in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic with William Wijns.

In Cairo, the situation is stable and like in most countries they divided the clinic into two wards: COVID-19 and non COVID-19. They dedicated fifteen hospitals to the epidemic and are taking part in eight trials.

In South Africa, they reorganized their services and they have limited most electives cases as well. However, they did not have to split the cardiology team since most of their patients are not COVID positive.

The key message they want to share is the utmost importance of providing safety for physicians and all care workers and that team effort is what will help defeat the disease!
