Interventional Cardiovascular Surgery

Cardiac surgery is surgery on the heart or great vessels performed by cardiac surgeons. It is often used to treat complications of ischemic heart disease (for example, with coronary artery bypass grafting) or to treat valvular heart disease from various causes. Cardiac surgeons, interventional cardiologists and imaging specialists typically work together as the Heart Team, in particular in structural heart centres of excellence. In this section, you will find a selection of content in the field of interventional vardiovascular surgery.

TAVI versus SAVR in aortic stenosis, is the debate still relevant in 2026?

02 Jun 2026

In this discussion, Helge Möllman and Eberhard Grube revisit the ongoing debate between TAVI and surgery in the treatment of aortic stenosis. While TAVI continues to expand into younger and more complex patient populations, they emphasise that the dialogue with cardiac surgery remains essential. They highlight the importance...

EuroPCR 2026 – Long-term mortality following revascularisation for left main disease

20 May 2026

Paris, France, 19−22 May 2026. The EuroPCR Course Directors have selected 3 major late-breaking trials that will be presented for the first time during EuroPCR 2026 and are set to impact practice worldwide. Among them is a meta-analysis of long-term data from 4 randomised trials investigating...

Impact of device implantation depth on blood flow dynamics after left atrial appendage closure

28 Apr 2026

The study aimed to evaluate the impact of LAAC device implantation depth on local flow characteristics and its association with device-related thrombus using patient-specific computational fluid dynamics.

Six-year outcomes after transcatheter vs surgical aortic valve replacement in low-risk patients with aortic stenosis

25 Feb 2026

The 6-year results of the Evolut Low Risk trial confirm the absence of significant differences in the composite primary endpoint between TAVR and surgery, but introduce an important nuance: the first signal of increased valve reintervention in the TAVR arm within this trial.

A challenging valve-in-valve scenario in a patient with prior aortic coarctation repair

02 Feb 2026

This case features a 79-year-old patient with severe aortic stenosis and a degenerated surgical bioprosthesis, who previously underwent complex aortic surgery for coarctation.

Redo surgery was high-risk, so a transcatheter valve-in-valve procedure was chosen.

Explore the case to see how anatomy, prosthesis sizing, and vascular access options guide...

Challenging PCI scenarios after CABG

10 Dec 2025 – From GulfPCR-GIM 2025

This session addresses the complexities of PCI in post-CABG patients, focusing on the application of intravascular imaging and functional assessment to guide strategy. It discusses clinical and anatomical factors influencing the choice between native vessel and graft PCI, and explores management techniques for unyielding graft lesions,...

When the interventional cardiologist meets the surgeon

18 Nov 2025 – From PCR London Valves 2025

This session highlights collaborative approaches between interventional cardiologists and surgeons in complex valve interventions. It includes cases such as transfemoral valve-in-valve TAVI in bio-Bentall patients with chronic aortic dissection, critical decision-making in life-threatening scenarios, the importance of access choice in TMVR, mechanical leaflet modification of failed...

PARTNER 3 — 7-year follow-up: what it means for low-risk patients

16 Nov 2025 – From PCR London Valves 2025

Philippe Généreux and Philippe Pibarot discuss the long-term findings from PARTNER 3 and their practical implications for patient care.

They review the 7-year comparison of transfemoral TAVR versus surgical aortic-valve replacement in symptomatic patients with severe aortic stenosis who are at low surgical risk, and why the...

Emergency transcatheter valve interventions: alternative therapy or bridge to surgery?

16 Nov 2025 – From PCR London Valves 2025

This session offers a compelling case-based exploration of emergency transcatheter valve interventions, demonstrating their potential as life-saving alternatives or bridges to surgery in high-risk patients. Through detailed clinical scenarios including cardiogenic shock, acute papillary muscle rupture, and severe aortic regurgitation from infective endocarditis, participants gain practical...
