PCR Planet: interventional cardiology in the context of COVID-19 in France and Germany

Interventional Cardiologists Nicole Karam, Paris, France, and Felix Mahfoud, Homburg/Saar, Germany, discuss the challenges of practicing cardiology in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic with William Wijns.

In Paris the situation has been so tough they had to switch almost all activity to COVID-19. Most PCI cases, structural or coronary, have been postponed and they were mainly treating emergencies. Yet, Nicole Karam witnessed many cardiac complications rarely seen because patients were presenting very late to the emergency room.

Fortunately, in Hamburg they did not see as many COVID-19 cases as initially anticipated. They had postponed many electives procedures at first but are now back to a regular schedule. They were even able to help their overwhelmed French colleagues from the Grand Est region.

In a nutshell, this experience has been humbling because even if it revealed how fragile our systems actually are, it has also proved how resilient and united we can be!
