REALITY - A trial of transfusion strategies for myocardial infarction and anemia
Reported from the European Society of Cardiology ESC Congress 2020
ESC Congress 2020: Tabassome Simon (Paris, France) discusses with Francesco Costa the results of REALITY trial which supports the use of a restrictive strategy for blood transfusion in MI patients with anemia.
Prof. Simon answers the following questions:
- Please describe the study background, main results and conclusions
- In MI patients anemia provokes additional ischemia that could worsen conditions. Why do you think transfusion, apparently an easy fix, does not appear to improve outcomes?
- Did you observe any difference in outcomes among patients presenting with overt clinical bleeding and those with chronic longstanding anemia?
- A cost-effectiveness primary endpoint is very interesting and informative, yet in the interventional community, we are not so used to this kind of metrics. Why did you choose to use this method?
- Is REALITY the definitive answer or do we need more data?
