Prof. Jean Marco

Jean Marco

Retired interventional cardiologist - Martres Tolosane, France

Jean Marco was born on 22 July 1942.

Medical Doctor, cardiologist, Jean Marco was appointed Professor of Cardiology in 1975 (University of Toulouse-France).

He initiated the programme of percutaneous coronary angioplasty procedures in 1979 (University Hospital Purpan, Toulouse-France).

In the 1980s he organised practical learning workshops, based on interactive exchange, through daily case presentations or live demonstrations, and the International Congress on Transluminal Angioplasty (January 1983), aiming to stimulate the participants’ critical reflection on the potential benefits of this technique and how to prevent or resolve issues.

In 1987 he left the University Hospital to found, with Jean Fajadet, the Interventional Cardiology Unit of the Clinique Pasteur-Toulouse.

Together they shared the following vision: “We are capable of building the best European annual course in the field of interventional cardiology. Let us commit ourselves with determination and passion to live this dream, drive and energy to succeed. It is a long-term vision; we have to work for our successors.

They defined the following points as the key foundations to reach this outcome:

- Create a forum for critical exchange on techniques and case-based information (broadcasted live or recorded), aiming to stimulate the participants’ critical thinking on daily working situations and develop collaborative practical learning messages.
- Teamwork : Together we will achieve more, if we trust and have confidence in each other.
- Strong work ethic.
- Attract and retain the best.
- Search for added value by innovation, creativity and flexibility.
- Be responsible for our actions with honesty, humility and integrity.
- Strive for excellence continuously via critical analysis and evaluation of our actions and, when needed, leading to behavioural change to create  improvement

The first annual "Course on Complex Coronary Angioplasty and New Techniques in Interventional Cardiology”, with Course Co-Directors Jean Marco, Jean Fajadet, Geoffrey Hartzler and Cass Pinkerton took place in Toulouse from 26 to 27 April 1989.

This Course was the starting point of what progressively has become, by disseminating and implementing the foundations stated above, EuroPCR and the PCR Family.

Festina Lente (hasten slowly): year after year Jean Marco has tried to implement this strategic statement and long-term vision.
